Pitesti Prison

Built under Antonescu’s fascist regime, this grim facility housed between one and five thousand political prisoners of the Communist authorities of Romania after 1947. Many of the initial prisoners were supporters of the fascist Iron Guard. From November 1949 to May 1952, the prison trustee, Eugen Turcanu imposed a reeducation experiment in the prison. Its aim was not only to induce prisoners to abandon prior loyalties but explicitly to alter their personalities to the point of absolute obedience.
